Sources of books for children and young people with a vision impairment
Big books
- Available from local libraries. Pre-school settings can sign up for a library card and then arrange an extended loan period.
Large print books
- Local library service. Books are marked as large print. You can request titles and they can see if it available in large print format
- CustomEyes service run by Guidedogs.org.uk. They offer large print books for the same price as standard books. Join for free as a family or school and access the catalogue. - Access 2 books –giant print (75pt) and braille (Early learning Braille – double spaced and single sided, giant print with braille – single spaced, double sided) books with written picture descriptions. Technology based

- Devon libraries have an app called ‘Libby’ which allows users to download e-books and talking books. https://devon.overdrive.com/
- Cerebra.org for e-books and audio books: Library – Cerebra
- RNIB Bookshare is a free library, for schools, that provides textbooks and materials to support national curricula. It offers a range of accessible formats for people who are unable to read standard print, including those with dyslexia and those who are blind or partially sighted. Braille
- Clearvision Project: Grade 1 and 2 Braille with standard print. Free for families, £50 per year for schools, libraries and sensory services.
