There are now many ways technology can help you to be healthier, and stay independent. Check out a full range of app and technology on the Independent living website.
This includes programs for your computer, tablet or mobile phone (often called ‘apps’), and new technology that can monitor and alert you when required.
Clever apps
There are many apps that you can use to monitor what food you eat and how much exercise you do, that can help you lose weight and feel healthier.
Check the sections on fitness, health and wellbeing on the App Store for your device.
The NHS is building a series of apps to help people stay healthy and well. Includes fitness apps like: Couch to 5K and Active 10, Change4life, help for families to be healthier, an easy meals app for suggestions for healthy meals and shopping lists for the ingredients you’ll need, a food scanner for counting the calories in your food, and a weight loss plan app with a weekly guide with actions, hints and tips for reaching your goal. Search for NHS on your device’s app store.
Smart technology
There are clever gadgets like speakers that listen to you – so you can tell it to turn on a lamp or other devices in the room. And there are smart door bells with a camera and speaker, so you can see who’s calling and speak to them using your mobile phone or tablet.
National charities provide advice and support with this:
- AbilityNet supports people to use technology. Their website gives advice on adapting a computer or tablet, using clever gadgets, and they can connect you to a volunteer who can give support with technology in your home. Call 0800 048 7642 (office hours). Email enquiries@abilitynet.org.uk. Website: www.abilitynet.org.uk.
- Disabled Living Foundation gives free impartial advice and information on solutions, gadgets, adaptations and aids to make life easier. Call 0300 999 0004 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm). Email info@dlf.org.uk. Website: Living Made Easy.
