It’s frustrating if a mobility or balance problem makes it difficult for you to get dressed and undressed.
There are a range of ways to get support with this, including equipment, specialist adapted clothing or having somebody come into your home to help.
You may be having difficulty keeping your clothes clean because of a physical or mental health problem. This section also has information about keeping clothes laundered and fresh.
Equipment
There is equipment available to help you deal with dressing challenges like putting on socks or doing up buttons or zips. An Independent Living Centre occupational therapist can talk to you about your needs and help you find the best solution. For more information, visit the Independent Living Centre website, phone: 01392 380 181 or email: ilc-exeter@devon.gov.uk.
Adapted clothing
There are lots of companies selling specialist and adaptive clothing which can make getting dressed and undressed much simpler. There is a lot of choice of smart and attractive clothes with clever adaptations. An Independent Living Centre occupational therapist can talk to you about your needs and help you find the best solution. For more information, visit the Independent Living Centre website, phone: 01392 380 181 or email: ilc-exeter@devon.gov.uk.
Personal care
You may need, or prefer, to have someone come to your home to help you get dressed. This may be a good option if you need help with a range of tasks like washing and going to the toilet as well. You can search online for local care agencies at the Care Quality Commission. We recommend that you contact a couple of agencies to find one that suits your needs and budget. An alternative to a care agency is a Personal Assistant where you can find one or advertise for one.

Cleaning clothes
Laundrettes
Several laundrettes in Devon offer a collection and drop-off service which means you can have your clothes washed and dried without leaving home. Find your local service on Yell or other local directories.
Mental health support
Struggling to keep your clothes, yourself or your home clean can be a sign of a mental health problem. If you think that you might need help, speak to your GP, or contact the Devon Depression and Anxiety Service.
