New to SENCo


Welcome to the role of SENCo in Devon. Whether this is your first experience as a SENCo, you are returning to the role after a break, or you have relocated to Devon to continue your work as a SENCo, this page should provide you with a wealth of information to support you in your role.

Introductory meeting

If you are new to the role of SENCo, or new to Devon, you can arrange an introductory Teams meeting with our SEND adviser, Hannah Chamings, who will talk you through some key information, share key dates for training and answer any questions you have. Email hannah.chamings@devon.gov.uk if you would like to book an introductory meeting.

New to role – SENCo training

This course will help to develop an understanding of both the strategic and operational aspects of being a SENCo in school and will help you to build a network of SEND support. The course will cover:

  • The legislation underpinning SEND in schools
  • The role of the SENCo: Operational and Strategic
  • SEND systems and processes to support the day-to-day tasks involved in being a SENCo
  • Who’s who in Devon? An introduction to key external agencies and how to make referrals
  • The EHCP process in Devon

New to SENCo top tips

A quick guide to support you with key tasks to do as you begin the role of SENCo.

SEND update

A fortnightly email providing you with key SEND information, the latest updates from different teams and services and key training opportunities. Make sure you are signed up to this here SEND updates – Support for schools and settings (devon.gov.uk)

SEND network meetings

These FREE events take place in the Autumn and Spring terms and provide a great opportunity to hear the latest updates from SEND services across Devon as well as network with other colleagues to share good practice and problem solve common challenges collaboratively.

SEND support services

In Devon, we have teams of highly experienced advisory teachers who offer support, advice and training across the 4 areas of need. More information about each team can be found here:

SEND helpline

The SEND helpline offers the opportunity to talk through any questions or concerns you may have around SEND policy, practice and implementation within your setting. It is available every Tuesday 12-4pm. 01392 287248 or email: sencohelpline@devon.gov.uk

SEND conference

Our annual SEND conference is always well attended by SEND leaders and practitioners from across the county, including SENCos. It features inspirational and insightful keynote speakers and a selection of workshops to support your knowledge, understanding and practice even further.

National Award for SEN Co-ordination

The NASENCo Award is still a mandatory qualification that SENCos need to obtain within 3 years of taking on the role. We deliver this training in collaboration with the University of Plymouth. SEND Statutory Team

This is the team in Devon that carries out education, health and care (EHC) needs assessments and maintains and reviews EHC plans for children and young people with SEND. You can find out more about them on our parent facing Education and families website Devon SEND Statutory Team.
