There are many types of restricted growth but Achondroplasia is the most common. It is a type of skeletal dysplasia which affects bone growth, resulting in short upper arms and thighs.
Symptoms
- Short stature, with short arms and legs (particularly in the upper arm and thigh).
- Limited range of movement in the elbow.
- Poor muscle tone and loose joints
- Macrocephaly (enlarged head with a prominent forehead)
- Arrested bone growth at the base of the skull and the spine may cause the spinal cord and brain stem to become compressed causing neurological impairment.
Education strategies
Think about things such as the height of tables and chairs in the classroom. Adapted chairs and footrests may be required. Also consider the height of the school’s toilet facilities, a step might be needed.
Consider the accessibility of resources around the school to ensure that children and young people can be as independent in possible in accessing the things they need to learn and to enjoy social times with their peers. For instance door handles, coat hooks, lockers, play equipment and PE equipment.
