Application details
Before you carry out any minor work on the highway or use it in a way that reduces its width, you will need to apply for a licence. The highway includes the road, pavement or verge.
Types of work that could require a licence include:
- depositing materials such as bricks and bags of sand or equipment
- house maintenance or building or repairing a boundary wall
- carrying out tree works
- using traffic lights, stop-and-go boards or other traffic management
Additional licences
If you need to close the road you will need to apply for a temporary traffic restriction. If your work requires more extensive excavations you will need to apply for a licence for apparatus and excavating the highway.
Please do not submit a minor works on the highway application if you require either of these licences. If you are unsure, please call 01392 385084 for advice.
You will need to apply for specific licences if you want to place a skip, scaffold, or other structure on the highway.
Cost
A licence costs £71. An extension, date change or amendment to an existing licence costs £54. Application costs are exempt from tax.
If the work involved has an impact on a pay or display parking bay or other on-street parking then the costs will be recovered from the applicant.
All costs are non-refundable.
Timescales
We need a minimum of 20 days’ notice to process the application. In exceptional emergency situations, it’s possible for us to grant a licence with less than 20 days’ notice – but this would be at an increased cost of £130.
