Temporary directional signs may be permitted on the public highway for certain short term events where there is likely to be a significant number of visitors unfamiliar with the area and existing directional signage is inadequate. These signs help road users find their way to an event safely and efficiently and are not for advertising or marketing purposes.
Signs must be supplied and installed by a signage contractor and comply with current standards. Devon County Council, as the Highway Authority, manages temporary event signage to help protect road safety, minimise street clutter and ensure consistency across the highway network.
Events that may qualify
Temporary signage may be permitted for:
- sporting events.
- exhibitions.
- public gatherings likely to attract a large volume of traffic.
- other similar short term events where directional signage is justified.
Cost
A single application covers up to six signs.
Where more than six signs are required, additional application fees will apply for each additional group of up to six signs (or part thereof).

Upon receipt of your application, a payment link will be sent. The application will not be processed until the payment has been received.

When signs can be displayed
Signs should normally:
- be erected no more than 48 hours before the event
- be removed not more than 24 hours after the event
Earlier installation may be considered if it can be demonstrated that doing so would benefit road users.
Timescales
Allow at least 20 working days’ for us to process your application.
Who can apply
Motoring organisations’ signage services or a specialist signage company.
Enforcement
If signs are installed without permission, or do not meet the terms and conditions Devon County Council may:
- require you to remove the signs until permission has been granted
- remove the sign(s) and recover costs (see highways fees and charges for details).
