Potholes

We are currently dealing with a very high number of pothole reports. Approximately a third of the reports we are receiving are duplicates and are already waiting to be assessed or repaired.

Where a report already exists please consider adding yourself to receive updates rather than logging a new report. This will help enable our inspection team to work as efficiently as possible during these challenging conditions.

Winter 2024

Following the period of extended wet weather that we experienced over the festive period, we have experienced a significant increase in the number of potholes being reported. The situation is expected to get worse as ‘freeze thaw’ effects lead to a further deterioration in road surfaces.

With pothole numbers higher than we’d like in the weeks ahead, we will be working with increased resources across the county in an attempt to keep on top of them – in December and January alone, we repaired almost 7,000 potholes.

Fixing potholes

Once a defect has been reported, we aim to visit and triage the report within three working days on our higher-category road network, and seven days on our lower-category network. The triage officer will then arrange the appropriate response based on our highway safety policy.

If the pothole meets the required criteria, we will do a temporary or permanent repair. The type of repair depends on the category of the road.

If you report a pothole and we don’t repair it straight away this could be because:

  • the pothole was inspected and is not deemed to be a safety defect
  • there is a problem with the surface of the road which needs to be investigated as a repair will not solve the underlying problem
  • traffic management is needed to carry out repairs safely
