You can use this service to report a damaged or missing roadside fence, wall or barrier.
Barriers (sometimes known as ‘road restraint systems’) include:
- vehicular restraint systems
- safety fences
- pedestrian guardrails
You will have the option to provide additional information about the problem and upload a photo. You will need to provide us with your name and an email address.
Before you start
If you are reporting an emergency that is very likely to present an imminent threat to life or serious injury or serious damage to property please instead call us on 0345 155 1004.
When you are using the map, if you can see that the issue you plan to report is already there, please use the option to add yourself to the existing problem instead of creating a duplicate report.
What happens next
Fences
If there is a problem with a privately-owned fence we will contact the landowner.
We will take action if a boundary fence that we maintain has:
- become dangerous due to impact or other damage
- become ineffective for stock-proofing
- an exposed length of tubular metal
We will:
- record the problem
- put up signs and cones around the problem
- arrange for livestock to be removed from the highways
- ensure that any fence we own is stock-proofed by the end of the next working day
- carry out a permanent repair within two months
Barriers
We will take action if the barrier:
- has obvious impact damage – for example, from a traffic collision
- is missing completely
- has loose or obviously out-of-date components
We will:
- record the problem
- put signs and cones round the problem by the end of the next working day
- carry out a permanent repair within one month
