Area 5 and Area 6 of the framework recognises the importance of teaching children and young people with vision impairment to be able to navigate the world around them, and to be able to move safely and with confidence from one place to the next.
It recognises the importance of each child or young person being supported to be as independent as possible, in an age appropriate way. It also recognises that other conditions (for example, learning or physical disabilities or both) may have an influence on how movement is achieved and taught.
It also recognises the importance of developing day to day skills in order to live as an independent a life as possible.
Much of the teaching should be undertaken by, or under the direction of, a registered qualified habilitation specialists (RQHS) or (particularly as the young person moves into adult services) a rehabilitation worker (vision impairment).
Our team works closely with our colleagues from Devon County Council’s ROVIC Service who are part of Disabled Children’s Services. They are a county-wide team supporting children and young people from birth to 18 years who have; vision, dual sensory (vision and hearing impairment) and deafblind impairment.
They provide:
- advice
