Area 4 of the framework recognises the importance of working with children and young people to develop literacy skills. This might involve specialist adjustments and approaches to teaching, or adopting alternative or bespoke approaches, codes and technology.
Examples of targeted outcomes of this area include:
- a clear and developing literacy pathway plan, informed, by assessment including appropriate strategies for those whose first language is not English
- literacy through print, for example, optimising print presentation; use of low vision devices; electronic magnification; electronic equipment, for example, tablets and specialist magnification software
- reading techniques
- literacy through braille, informed by regular assessment: Including pre – and early Braille; Braille reading and writing – uncontracted or contracted Braille, specialist Braille codes, for example, maths, music, science codes and refreshable Braille technology
- literacy through sensory stories, pictures and object symbols
- speech technology
- writing and use of appropriate technology: Braille, computer, pen, dictation software
- handwriting, developing an appropriate handwriting style which aids legibility
- learning through touch
