Broadband Subsidy 80% Allowance

During the summer holidays your school will have received a credit with the narrative “Broadband Subsidy 80% Allowance”.  This credit is your school’s share of the broadband subsidy agreed by Devon Education Forum (DEF) for the financial year 1/4/13 to 31/3/14 financial year 2013-2014.  It is based upon 80% of your total internet connectivity charges for 2013/2014 this period.

In the coming weeks your school will receive two invoices for this service.

  • One invoice will be from Devon County Council (DCC) for 100% of the cost of this service for 5 months (1st April 2013 – 31st August 2013).
  • The other invoice will be from South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) for 100% of the cost of this service for 7 months (1st September 2013 – 31st March 2014).

This will result in your school only having to find the funds to pay for 20% of these charges as has been the case in previous years.

Decision was made by SFG (Schools Finance Group) which is a sub group of DEF in June 2013 and endorsed by DEF afterwards. There was not time to communicate this to all Devon Maintained schools before the end of the summer term. The end result of this decision is that the position for schools has not changed ie the schools are being subsidised by 80% and will be picking up 20% of the cost as per the original arrangements communicated in March 2013. e-mail from Nick Pearce, Scomis, of 15 March 2013 said 80% would be paid centrally and establishments would only be charged 20%. Why change the arrangement half way through the financial year?
