iPad accessibility settings

Changing display settings:

There are numerous ways in which you can adjust the display settings on an iPad within the ‘Settings’ app (grey cog). A few that may be worth exploring are:

Settings app (Grey cog) > Display & Brightness:

Light / Dark mode: Change the whole theme of the iPad to light / dark backgrounds and inverts text colour.

Change Text size: Across all menus and most native apps (won’t work on everything).

Turn bold text on / off: May make menu text easier to read

Settings app (Grey cog) > Home Screen & App library:

You can choose to ‘Use large App icons

Settings app (Grey cog) > Accessibility > Display and Text size

You can adjust the ‘Display and Text size’ further

Using Reader Mode:

Reader mode (on Safari browser) simplifies web pages, removing distractions and making content easier to read.

Access it by tapping the ‘Aa’ icon.

It’s worth noting that sometimes it can remove relevant content depending on the website. It will also limit access to video content etc.

Built-in Zoom:

Once you get the hang of the zoom function it can be quite useful.

Settings app (Grey cog) > Accessibility > Zoom:

Toggle it to ‘on’ and then you can double-tap 3 fingers to zoom in on part of the screen.

Drag 3 fingers to move around – it can take some getting used to.

Customising app icons and colour tints

You can now customise your homepage icons and give the whole page a colour theme using tints.

Long press anywhere on the homepage. Select ‘Edit’ at the top left.

Select ‘customise’ from the menu box that appears.

Small / large options will remove labels from the apps.

You can also choose from the preselected options for the colour scheme.

If you select ‘Tinted’ you can use the sliders to adjust the colours of the icons.

Using Guided access:

Guided access allows you to lock an app to the iPad, meaning that only the selected app can be used.

Useful for children and young people who may accidently or deliberately swipe apps closed.
