Early Communication – Total Communication

A total communication approach allows learners to communicate in the most accessible way to them.

Some examples

  • Non-verbal: Body movements, eye pointing, gestures.
  • Language-based communication: Speech, lip reading, deafblind manual alphabet, sign systems, including British Sign Language (BSL), Makaton, on body signs or hand under hand signs.
  • Symbol systems: Objects of reference, Widgit, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), line drawings, pictures and photographs.

Some typical responses

  • Uses their chosen communication method to show preferences.
  • Uses intentional communication, e.g. pushing away / reaching for objects.
  • Shows understanding of signs and symbols used within familiar routines, e.g. more / stop / finish.
  • Differentiates between familiar adults.
  • Shows understanding of familiar symbols in context by showing pleasure of rejection.
