Celebrating diversity

There are many opportunities throughout the year for schools to celebrate diversity, we’ve listed some annual events below. Let us know how you celebrate! Email us at educate.educationethnicdiverseachievement-mailbox@devon.gov.uk to tell us what you are doing to celebrate so we can include this in our newsletter and you can also contact us to seek support with workshops, cultural days and story-telling.

European Day of Languages

Our team of bilingual teachers deliver sessions in Devon schools to celebrate European Day of Languages by running a series of cultural workshops and language lessons. These include storytelling, presentations of different countries, learning key-phrases in other languages and many more.

This cultural event happens every year on the 26 September and it is a great way to introduce pupils in your schools to different cultures and languages.

If you are celebrating it, please let us know by getting in touch and sending us some photos, your article could appear in our next newsletter!

Refugee Week

Refugee Week takes place annually in June. We are very excited to be involved in the Refugee Week Celebrations. We can deliver story telling, cultural awareness and small group workshops.

Feel free to visit our refugee dedicated pages for more resources.

World Book Day

World Book Day is celebrated during the spring (date varies) and every year the EDEAS team has been offering story-telling sessions in various languages in schools.

In 2021 we offered video recordings of our bilingual teachers reading ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ in their own language. Please download the videos and the follow-up activity and let us know how you celebrate this event.

Below are videos of Little Red Riding Hood read in four languages:

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year generally falls between January 21 and February 20. Our Bilingual support workers can deliver story-telling, workshops and activities to your classroom.
