A total communication approach allows learners to communicate in the most accessible way to them.
Some examples
- Non-verbal: Body movements, eye pointing, gestures.
 - Language-based communication: Speech, lip reading, deafblind manual alphabet, sign systems, including British Sign Language (BSL), Makaton, on body signs or hand under hand signs.
 - Symbol systems: Objects of reference, Widgit, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), line drawings, pictures and photographs.
 
Some typical responses
- Uses their chosen communication method to show preferences.
 - Uses intentional communication, e.g. pushing away / reaching for objects.
 - Shows understanding of signs and symbols used within familiar routines, e.g. more / stop / finish.
 - Differentiates between familiar adults.
 - Shows understanding of familiar symbols in context by showing pleasure of rejection.
