In 2020 during the Covid pandemic, we partnered with the National Literacy Trust to create these plans, based on the incredible The Book of Hopes, edited by Katherine Rundell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. More information can be found here. Although the book and resources were written for this specific context, they are still relevant to use as part of your English writing curriculum. However, as these plans were designed for children returning after lockdown, there are a number of assessment activities which may not be relevant now.
Year 6 and 7 transition sequences
Year 6: The Book of Hopes – a teaching sequence to celebrate hope and support transition
This teaching sequence was writing specifically to support transition to Year 7. We hope that your Year 6 children will be inspired to express their own hopes in a special piece of writing to celebrate moving on to the next phase in their education.
Year 7: The Book of Hopes – a teaching sequence to support transition
This 18-session sequence is designed to be used as a helpful transition for your new Year 7 cohort.
We hope that the sequence will act as further CPD for your teachers in understanding how to connect KS2 knowledge and skills with the foundations required for a successful KS4.
Primary phase sequences
There are 3 teaching sequences for writing, one for each phase, designed to be used at the start of the school year.
The aims:
- to provide reading and writing opportunities that are meaningful to the children but that also incorporate revision of fundamental elements of the curriculum
- to enable essential assessment of key elements of prior learning and of age-related expectations to identify gaps, support whole class planning priorities and determine intervention needs

Additionally, we have written Re-think Reading! plans for all Primary phases.
