Reading assessment sheets

These set out the national curriculum programme of study for each phase in KS1 and 2 and are presented as assessment criteria. Designed to support teacher assessment of reading, statements have been grouped in what we hope is a helpful and intuitive way:

  • decoding.
  • reading for pleasure.
  • inference.
  • prediction.
  • clarifying.
  • questioning.
  • summarising.
  • language for effect.
  • themes and convention.

We’ve also roughly matched Accelerated Reader and reading age markers and, where appropriate, book bands to age-related expectations.

We have chosen to include 4 progress points within each that indicate the level of independence with which each statement can be achieved, they are:

  • E = ‘Emerging
  • TI = ‘Towards Independence
  • Ex = ‘Expected
  • GD = ‘Greater Depth

Schools can adapt these to match their own assessment policies.

The sheets are particularly suited to recording periodic summative assessment and can be used in conjunction with our guided reading records, though teachers will no doubt wish to mix and match as they see fit.
