Toolkit to identify needs of children with challenging behaviour

It is important to understand why a child may be struggling in school and to consider the possibility of contributing factors to behaviour, such as SEND or difficulties at home and in the community.

The exclusion guidance states that ‘disruptive behaviour can be an indication of unmet needs. Where a school has concerns about a pupil’s behaviour, it should try to identify whether there are any causal factors and intervene early.

It is critical for schools to carry out an assessment of need in order to ensure the right support can be offered.
