Proficiency assessments

Proficiency describes how a child is acquiring English.  Having an understanding of a child’s proficiency in English when they start and through their time with you, will be key to implementing support and classroom strategies.  It also demonstrates the progress the child is making in key areas such as;

  • speaking
  • listening and understanding
  • reading
  • writing and grammar
  • personal independence, social and emotional development (EYFS only)

Our Proficiency assessment tool is matched to the Proficiency markers set out by the DFE in 2016.  This is designed to help teachers identify English language levels across the different key stages, with key skills in mind. Proficiency should be on-going and properly reviewed at least termly to track the child’s development and set new targets.  All teachers and practitioners should use the Proficiency assessments to track progress and set language learning targets.

Schools can obtain the EDEAS Proficiency Assessment tool by emailing us: educate.educationbilingualsupport-mailbox@devon.gov.uk.
