Grass cutting in Mid Devon

Historically Mid Devon District Council (MDDC) undertook highway grass cutting in towns and villages on our behalf. We provided the funding for our agreed level of service, and they chose to provide a higher standard of service, cutting at an increased frequency, and picking up the additional cost.

Following the Tough Choices consultation, we reduced our level of service and policy to four cuts a year, only cutting safety-related areas such as visibility splays. The contribution to MDDC was reduced accordingly.

MDDC made the decision to carry on with their higher standard of service at an increased frequency with the extra costs being met by themselves. This was for one year only while they consulted with town and parish councils on whether they wanted to fund the higher level of service in the future.

The result is that from this financial year (2016/17) some of the town and parish councils are contributing a financial top-up in order to have grass cut by MDDC at their higher standard of service and those that opted not to contribute are now only having grass cut by our contractor to our policy and standard for safety.
