What we are doing
We will be carrying out overnight highway improvement work at three locations around Barnstaple during March 2026 (weeknights only).
Details of the work is as follows:
- Monday 2 to Tuesday 10 March 2026, 7.00 pm to 6.00 am: A361 Barnstaple Western Bypass.
- Monday 9 to Tuesday 17 March 2026, 7.00 pm to 6.00 am: A39 North Road and Pilton Causeway.
- Monday 16 to Tuesday 24 March 2026, 7.00 pm to 7.00 am: A39 Eastern Avenue.
For safety reasons the roads will be closed to all through traffic during our working hours.
Access
We will maintain access for residents and to businesses but delays should be expected. Access for emergency vehicles will always be maintained.
Pedestrian access will be maintained wherever it is safe to do so. On-street parking will be prohibited and we kindly ask that vehicles are not left on the road.
Diversion routes
Please see the road closures and works areas highlighted in red on the maps below with the signed diversion routes shown in blue. Drivers with local knowledge may use alternative routes but these will not be advertised for safety reasons.
Barnstaple Western Bypass

The diversion route will be fully signed for road users via the A39 to A3125 and vice versa.

The diversion route will be fully signed for road users via Shirwell Cross – B3230 – Lynton Cross – A3123 – Mullacott Cross – A361 – B3149 and vice versa.
