- Why are the works taking place?
The existing drainage system which takes water away from town centre has come to the end of its life and needs to be completely replaced throughout Station Hill. New pipework is to be installed which will ensure that surface water is removed more efficiently. Where possible we will use the existing gullies and chambers but have allowed for their replacement if it becomes apparent that it is necessary. This will resolve the issue of pooling water which has plagued this section of road for many years.
- Why can some of the works be undertaken by temporary traffic lights and not all the site?
The lower section of Station Hill is wide enough for both residents and visitors to drive whilst we undertake the works under traffic management. Towards the town centre, the carrier drain runs along the middle of the carriageway and the road narrows hence why a Road Closure and no through traffic will have to be implemented for safety for all.
- Why are we undertaking the works in September to early December and not January or February?
Works have to be coordinated with various parties including National Highways for the official diversion route. Once we get into January and February, Devon Highways staff will be heavily focussed on Winter Service and keeping the wider network safe and open, so to commence in mid-winter could lead to a much longer scheme and more disruption.
- How are you minimising disruption?
We considered night time working but this is not possible in this location due to safety implications and disruption to localised residents. We are placing extra work people on site where possible and using technology to assist as much as is safe and practical to do so.
- Is there an official diversion route?
Yes. Please see Causeway one.network for more information on this.
- Can Oldway be made a one way system?
It is important to understand that Oldway is not an official diversion route. There are a number of adjacent roads feeding off of Oldway as well. We considered making Oldway “one way” but determined that this would likely lead to confusion and potential safety issues for those users accessing the street from those side roads.
- Can you make The Parade and New Exeter Street no parking?
Any existing parking restrictions within both roads will be not affected and will continue as normal.
- Can you make the car park free?
The Car park is owned and maintained by Teignbridge District Council and not Devon County Council therefore we have no jurisdiction on this. Further details can be found at Bovey Tracey and Chudleigh – Chudleigh – Teignbridge District Council
- What happens if there is an incident on the A38 and A380?
National Highways have been consulted about the works and will have their own plans for any issues on the A38 during the closure. With regards to the A380, drivers will be directed on the A38 towards Drumbridges to the A382 and towards Newton Abbot.
- What happens with buses and school transport?
