Project update – 5 January 2026
Devon County Council are pleased to announce that the new Chudleigh Road link in Exeter will open to traffic on 19 January 2026, providing a new signal‑controlled junction with the A379, replacing the current junction between Chudleigh Road and the A379. On the same date the former A379/Chudleigh Road junction will be permanently closed to motor vehicles, completing the switch to the new alignment. The project delivers approximately 390 metres of new carriageway and widening of the existing A379 to support the developing area.
This scheme is the final highway scheme being delivered as part of the South West Exeter Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) programme, coordinated by Devon County Council and funded by Government, which is unlocking land for around 2,500 new homes and 5 hectares of employment land. Construction of the new link road, which commenced in November 2024, has included substantial earthworks with approximately 48,000 m³ of general fill for new and widened embankments, and 14,500 m³ of deep soil mixing to improve ground conditions beneath the link road formation, delivered by Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd
What we are doing
We are constructing the new Chudleigh Link Road, which will provide vital highway infrastructure to support residential development in the Southwest Exeter area. The scheme will comprise:
- construction of a new link road (Chudleigh Link Road) between the existing Chudleigh Road and the A379
- construction of a new signalised junction with the A379 and Chudleigh Link Road with associated widening of the A379 to provide two ahead lanes and a left turn lane northbound, and two ahead lanes and a right turn lane, southbound
- carriageway resurfacing of the A379
- installation of associated road markings, and traffic signs
- an amount of replacement planting, to include trees and hedge plants
These works are scheduled to take place from 5 November 2024 to January 2026.
The location and extent of the works is shown in the below site extents plans.
Traffic management
To ensure the safety of both workers and the public during the construction phase, several traffic management measures will be implemented including:
- intermittent night-time road closures of the A379 (both east-bound and west-bound) between Peamore Flora and Devon Hotel Roundabout
- intermittent night-time road closures of Chudleigh Road between the A379 and Waybrook Lane
- closure of Ellacott Road between the A379 and Garrison Road
- scheme-wide speed limit reduction to 30mph
Specific dates for these road closures will be communicated in advance as the project progresses. A fully signed diversion will be in place when a road is closed overnight.
Exact dates of overnight work may need to be adjusted due to bad weather or unforeseen site conditions. We will confirm closure dates nearer the time via large, trailer mounted signs, which can also be updated with any changes if needed.
