Supporting health and social care providers in Devon

Shared Lives

Housing Strategy 2020 – 2025 Definition

In a Shared Lives Scheme, a client is matched with a host family and lives as part of that family. They share family life and live with the host family. The host family provides individualised support and/or personal care.

Shared Lives can support clients from the age of 16 and there is no upper age limit. This can be from any client group.

DCC has a contract with Shared Lives South West for the delivery of this service and this organisation is registered with and monitored by the CQC as a provider of personal care services.

Placements can be long term or short term and they are made through Shared Lives who then issue an individual contract for each service user.

This can be for:

  • long-term support
  • a short break
  • daytime support

Shared Lives is suitable for an adult (and sometimes a 16/17-year-old) who needs support and/or accommodation.

Shared Lives can be used by people with learning disabilities, people with mental health problems, older people, care leavers, young disabled adults, parents with learning disabilities and their children, people who misuse substances and offenders.

If you would like to know more, visit the Shared Lives website.
