Introducing Our New Brass Rubbing Nature Trail!

Discover our brand‑new Brass Rubbing Nature Trail at the Grand Western Canal! Perfect for families, children, and anyone who loves a hands‑on adventure, this trail invites you to explore the canal while collecting brass rubbings from a series of beautifully designed plaques.

New Brass Rubbing Nature Trail Guide and example of rubbing postThe Grand Western Canal Country Park stretches for eleven and a quarter miles between Tiverton and the little hamlet of Lowdwells. Full of wildlife and stunning views, it’s a wonderful place for families to explore the Mid Devon countryside together.

To celebrate the amazing plants and animals that live here—and to encourage you to discover more of the canal—we’ve hidden 26 brass rubbing posts along the towpath. Each post features a picture of a plant or animal you may spot nearby.

The textured plaques are perfect for making rubbings. Simply bring along a notepad and a pencil or crayon, or pick up a rubbing kit for a small fee at the Canal Basin gift shop and cafés.

You might enjoy collecting the rubbings over several visits, or you could try to find all 26 in one fun‑filled day—especially if you’re cycling the towpath!

Follow the route using the Nature Trail Guide (available here to download and print, or from the Visitor Information Centre in the Canal Basin). Inside, you’ll find a map showing the location of all the posts, plus a table where you can record the plant and animal images you discover along the way.
