Knowle Footbridge provides a link between Knowle and the National Cycle Network Route 27 and is located in Braunton,
North Devon.

The existing bridge was constructed from timber and believed to have been constructed in 2009.
The existing timber bridge had deteriorated beyond repair as the main beams and deck planks were rotten has reached
the end of their useful life.

What were the options?

Modern timbers and their respective preservative treatments often have short lifespans, it was therefore decided a like for
like timber replacement would not be suitable or provide the sufficient whole life cost.

Alternative such as steel, concrete and Glass Reinforced Plastice (GRP) materials were considered.

A GRP bridge was chosen due to its lightweight construction, long life span and limited maintenance requirements. The
new bridge is constructed of pultruded GRP beams, GRP parapets and GRP deck boards. This was the first bridge of its
kind installed by the EDG Bridges team. The existing concrete abutments remained and were reused for the new bridge.

Who was involved?

The scheme was managed and supervised by a Graduate Engineer within the EDG bridges and structures team.

The design was subcontracted to the GRP bridge supplier.
