How to find us

The Grand Western Canal Country Park is situated in Mid Devon, 17 miles north of Exeter and 20 miles south west of Taunton.


  • By car

    How to find us by car

    For access to the Canal Basin and southern end of the Canal

    Grand Western Canal Brown Tourist SignThe main entrance to the Country Park is the Canal Basin in Tiverton. Brown tourist signs with a Barge or Country Park logo, lead from the surrounding road network to the Canal Basin car park on Canal Hill.

    For access to the central section of the Canal

    The surrounding road network makes it possible to access the canal at regular intervals along its entire length.

    From Tiverton – take the road towards Halberton, passing Blundells School;

    From the M5 –  Turn off the M5 at Junction 27 and follow the A361 North Devon Link Road, taking the first exit to Sampford Peverell.


    To access the northern end of the Canal

    From the M5 – Turn off the M5 at Junction 27 and follow the A38 to Wellington and follow signs to Burlescombe.

  • On foot or by bike

    How to find us on foot

    You can walk or cycle to the Grand Western Canal.

    If on foot, follow the fingerposts directional signs that have been installed around Tiverton town towards the Canal. The fingerposts are colour coordinated to the destinations – follow the green sign for the Canal.


    How to find us by bike

    Cycling is a popular way for families and individuals to access and explore the Country Park. National Cycle Network Route 3 follows much of the Canal.

    The towpath is flat, which makes it an accessible path for all, however cyclists must dismount and walk under bridges when indicated by signs and give way to pedestrians and the horses drawing the passenger barge at all times.

  • By bus

    How to find us by bus

    There are regular bus services to Tiverton from Exeter, Barnstaple, Crediton and Taunton.

    Tiverton MuseumOnce at Tiverton Bus Station, the Canal Basin is a half mile walk up Canal Hill (the Tourist Information Centre – in the Museum close to the bus station – can give directions if necessary).

    Alternatively you can catch the Tidcombe Circular bus service which stops just past the Canal Basin, at the top of Withy Close/Spurway Road, and at another access point near Tidcombe Bridge.

    There are other regular bus services from Tiverton to Exeter (1) (1A) and from Tiverton to Taunton (22). All routes stop in Halberton, however only route (1) goes to Sampford Peverell and at Tiverton Parkway Train Station.

  • By train

    Tiverton Parkway Railway StationTiverton Parkway Train Station is located between Sampford Peverell and M5 Junction 27, six miles from Tiverton. The station is served by most trains approaching from Exeter and Taunton.

    Boehill Bridge on the Canal is only a half a mile walk away from the station.



Country Park map

The Canal extends for eleven and a quarter mile (18km) from the Canal Basin in Tiverton, through the villages of Halberton, Sampford Peverell, and Burlescombe, to the hamlet of Lowdwells, close to the Somerset border.
