Working as a School Nurse

School Nurses are registered nurses who have completed additional training to become Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN) in School Nursing. They lead and deliver the Healthy Child programme thereby improving outcomes for children, young people and families.

They work with children and young people (and their families) from 5-19 years of age and are supported by their Team Leaders, colleague Health Visitors, School Nurses, Staff Nurses and Community Health workers. They work with schools and multi-agency partners, identifying needs and providing early intervention preventative support and advice.

They contribute to the Public Health Agenda, meet Public Health targets and reduce health inequalities in partnership with key agencies meeting the national agenda. They promote the protection of children, adhering to the Local Safeguarding Children’s Board policies and procedures.

Continuous Service for all new staff joining from the NHS

From June 1st 2024, all new staff joining Devon County Council (DCC) from the NHS will maintain their continuous service for calculation of DCC sick pay entitlement and DCC Maternity/Adoption and paternity pay entitlement.
