Clear career pathways during the ASYE programme and beyond
We offer clear and structured career progression pathways if you want to complete the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme with us at Devon County Council (DCC).
To apply for the programme, you must complete your degree in social work and fill in an application form. If successful, your career journey will begin as a newly qualified social worker (shown in the diagram).
Upon completing the ASYE programme, you will become an experienced social worker, with a position within DCC guaranteed.
Then depending on your career aspirations, you can develop further into an advanced social worker or frontline management.
Attractive salary
When you start the ASYE programme, you will receive a salary based on Social Worker Grade F scale point 24 (see diagram for current figures). After six months, you will receive an incremental pay increase to Grade F scale point 26. Following the successful completion of the ASYE programme, you will rise to Experienced Social Worker Grade G scale point 29.
Why stay with DCC after your ASYE?
DCC believe in investing in our social workers and encouraging practitioners to stay in practice. So retaining the knowledge and expertise of those with significant social work experience is vital to continue to develop our workforce. Therefore there are many incentives to remain with us here in Children’s Social Care after you complete your ASYE programme. We will offer you:
- a clear career pathway aligned with the BASW Professional Capability Framework (PCF) for social workers.
- many secondments and opportunities to help you progress further in your career
- up to £2,000 retention payment per year, paid in two six-monthly instalments for those working as a social worker in either Permanency and Transition, Children and Families, Initial Response, and Disabled Children’s Service for six months (pro rata for part-time employees)
- to pay your professional re-registration fees, so you don’t have to
- a chance to make a real difference in children’s and young people’s lives in Devon

How to apply for the ASYE programme
The next ASYE programme will begin in May 2023, with the application process opening from the 13th of February till the 12th of March 2023. As soon as the application process opens, we will put a link below to direct you straight to the website to apply.
