Overseas social work opportunities for 2024

Social workers are at the heart of our workforce, ensuring that children and their families receive the support and help they need.

Here in Devon, we have developed a bespoke programme of support to allow qualified and experienced overseas social workers a route to transition into children’s social work in the UK.  As well as a wide range of career opportunities, we can offer the tools and support required for you to deliver improved outcomes for the children and young people in Devon. You will receive a learning agreement for your six-month transition programme, with regular supervision and support. Your caseload will reflect your professional capability and development needs and will enable you to do meaningful work with local families.  In addition, we will also ensure that you will have protected time to participate in learning and development activities and opportunities to develop your practice capability.

You CAN make a real difference to children and families across our beautiful county.

To be eligible for the programme you will:

  • Be a FULLY qualified social worker.
  • Have several years proven experience within children’s social work.
  • Be registered with Social Worker England (SWE).

Feedback from Thenjiwe Ndlovu (Experienced Social Worker)

Thenjiwe joined us via the overseas programme last year, answers some of our questions regarding the programme, her role in DCC and how she found relocating to the UK.

Things to research before applying

Before applying for the programme, there is a great deal you should think about and research. Topics suggested by current experienced social workers are:

  • Cost of living in the UK.
  • The cost of childcare for preschool children.
  • Organising school places for dependents – looking at qualification and subject transfers.
  • Cost implications if you change your mind and want to return to your country of origin.
