Do it to empower people to live more independently

As a Community Enabler working in Devon’s Reaching for Independence (RFI) service, you’ll take a strengths-based, person-centred approach to support individuals aged 17years and above in achieving greater independence and reaching their personal goals—whether at home, in the workplace, or within their community.
This is a short-term service focused on building confidence, reducing reliance on support, and enabling people to take control of their lives.

Why we do it for Devon
Community and travel training
“Travel training involves looking at how public transport can support an individual to lead a more independent life. I teach basic travel skills—how to use apps like Stagecoach, South West Rail, and Traveline, read timetables, buy tickets, and stay safe while travelling. At first, I support the person on their journey. As their confidence grows, they begin to travel parts of the route alone. The end goal is full independence.”
Living independently at home
“Supporting this client was a privilege. Despite severe fatigue and complex needs, they were determined to regain independence. Through planning, encouragement, and practical tools, they built confidence, accessed services, and managed daily life. It was inspiring to witness their resilience and see them thrive without ongoing statutory support.”
Employment support
“Supporting J was a joy. Despite communication and physical challenges, he showed real determination. Together, we built his confidence, developed a strong CV, and secured meaningful employment. Seeing him thrive at the university, build friendships, and grow in independence has been incredibly rewarding. He truly deserves every success.”
