Why was a scheme needed?

Marsh Barton is one of the largest employment sites in the region and Exeter’s largest trading estate. The aim of the
project was to improve the competitiveness of existing businesses and unlock further economic growth through
development at Marsh Barton and the South West Exeter region. The planned growth of the area was previously
restricted by poor transportation links which halted developments and reduced viability of existing businesses.

What works were involved?

– Two 124m length platforms with associated access ramps compliant for Persons of Reduced Mobility
– New signalling equipment and track alignment
– Lighting, help points, CCTV & public announcement systems
– Large diameter drainage works
– Station cycle storage and waiting shelters
– Devon County Council 3m wide cycle and pedestrian footbridge
– Devon County Council highway access routes including reinforced earth retaining structures

Who was involved?

The project was managed and supervised on a day-to-day basis by an Engineer within DCC’s EDG bridges and structures
design team supported by other Engineers and Senior Engineers to assist overseeing the site works.

The project was delivered by Devon County Council, working in partnership with external funders including Great Western
Rail, Network Rail, Department for Transport, Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Exeter City Council
and Teignbridge District Council.
