Working in Exeter
We are a friendly and supportive team, offering monthly personal and case supervision, annual appraisals and regular training and development opportunities to support our teams in their careers.
We are passionate about learning and development, regularly delivering workshops within the locality to support social workers with their continuous professional development. Alongside learning opportunities delivered locally by our management team, our Social Work Academy also offers comprehensive training and support in many areas, including Restorative Practice.
Our caseloads are regularly review by senior managers to ensure that our social workers are supported in their roles. There is a management presence every day for any assistance that you may need.
Our Offices
County Hall, Topsham Road, Exeter EX2 4QD
Based in County Hall, our Exeter teams enjoy working from a centrally located office set in 22 acres of beautiful grounds. County Hall is easily accessed by public transport and main road access to the M5, A38 and A30. There is an array of local shops with easy reach, and the city centre is just a 15 to 20-minute walk away. The stunning Exeter Quayside is less than 10-minute walk from County Hall – perfect for a beautiful lunchtime walk.
Being based at the Council’s headquarters means that our Exeter teams are co-located with many other teams within Children’s Social Care and beyond, which is handy for partnership working and delivering the best outcomes for the children and families you work with.
Flexible working
Devon County Council embraces flexible working, subject to the needs of individual service areas. Staff are provided with the technology to enable remote-working, and we can consider different working patterns to support your work-life balance (again subject to service and manager needs).
Feel free to discuss this further with us at interview.
Living in Exeter
Exeter is vibrant, attractive and interesting city, superbly located at the end of the M5 in the heart of Devon. The city has everything you’d expect to find in a city, without the feeling of being in one!
There are plenty of shopping opportunities on our thriving high street – the Princesshay shopping centre is filled with major high street names, whilst there’s plenty of independent boutiques to explore on Gandy Street. There’s a great mix of restaurants, and plenty of pubs, bars and clubs to enjoy with family and friends.
A cultural hub, Exeter has a great arts scene with a growing number of top music performances and sporting events, as well as a range of galleries and creative events to enjoy.
Our Quayside is a 15-minute walk from the centre and offers plenty of water and adventure activities as well as great walks along the river to Topsham, Starcross and beyond. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the landscapes of Dartmoor National Park are within easy reach.
Beachgoers are spoilt for choice – Exmouth and the Jurassic Coast are short drives away, whilst the seaside towns of Dawlish,
Teignmouth and Torquay are easily accessible.
We’re well connected to the rest of the UK – with rail connections to Cornwall, Bristol, London and the North of England and an international airport on the city’s edge.
Accommodation and Housing
For a two-bed house, the average rent in Exeter is approximately £930 PCM, and the average purchase price is £230,000. Prices will vary dependent upon location – city centre properties are naturally more expensive. Please check property websites for up-to-date prices.
