I joined Devon County Council in 2007 on a Business Administration Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship was a brilliant way to gain a broad range of experience and knowledge about different career paths and during my second year I obtained a permanent role within the HR Administration Team and completed my level 2 and 3 NVQ.
The support for my personal and professional development has been excellent; with the Council encouraging and funding further study, including a certificate in Personnel Practice. It’s been a great way to learn and develop whilst earning a living. I’ve since gone on to achieve a Masters Degree in HR Management which help support a promotion to an HR Adviser role in 2014. In 2022 I completed, with distinction, a level 5 Leadership and Management Apprenticeship.
Over my 15+ years at Devon, I’ve had opportunities to study alongside my role, contribute to cross-functional projects, and grow through promotions
In 2024 I was promoted to HR Business Partner, following changes within People and Culture. In my current role, I act as a strategic link between service areas and the HR function—using data and insight to drive workforce planning, lead on complex HR matters, and shape policy and practice.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of the Council and would highly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone that is struggling with their career choices. On top of that, Devon’s flexible working culture has given me a brilliant work-life balance, allowing me to pursue passions outside of work and start a family.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have ‘stumbled’ across a role I love!
