Job title: Health and Safety Advisor

Area of work: Health and Safety

I began my career as a joiner. Throughout my time in the trade, I learnt lots of valuable skills and developed my knowledge of Health and Safety. I was able to use these transferable skills to make a career change into the Health and Safety field.

I started at DCC 11 years ago as a Health and Safety Assistant. Since then, I have progressed into my current role as a Health and Safety Adviser.

I am the lead advisor for schools and academies and oversee over 130 educational establishments. Some of my main duties include, meeting staff and carrying out site inspections and health and safety reviews, circulating key messages, meeting with senior managers to cascade information and delivering Health and Safety training.

I enjoy meeting a wide variety of people and knowing that my role makes a real difference to what they do. I can see the progress that is made and it’s great to know that I have helped to improve the Health and Safety in the school / academy.

I work in a small, but very supportive team and it’s great that we can offer advice and share best practice with one another. The flexible working offered is a real bonus, and I can work from home on a regular basis which avoids commuting costs and time. The pension scheme is pretty great also!
