Katherine graduated from the University of Plymouth with a Master’s degree in Civil and Coastal Engineering in 2010 before joining Devon County Council as a Graduate Engineer on the Graduate Rotation Scheme later the same year. In 2013 Katherine was promoted to Assistant Engineer, followed by a further promotion to Engineer in 2017. In 2020 Katherine achieved Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers, which led to a promotion to Senior Engineer.
Katherine’s highlight of her time in EDG so far:
Bridge Road Swing Bridge Realignment, Exeter
“I had the great opportunity to both lead the design, and project manage this scheme including an
element of site supervision. We needed to alter the alignment of Bridge Road at the Swing Bridge to
allow two lanes of traffic over the structure. This formed part of a much larger scheme to increase
capacity along Bridge Road and unlock developments in the south west of Exeter.
Permanently rotating the bridge was a complicated and welcome challenge. I applied my engineering
skills to solve problems, extend and alter structures, and move bearings etc to accommodate the
new bridge position. My designs were drawn up and my structure specific specification elements
contributed to the tender package.
Once a Contractor was appointed under an NEC3 Option A contract I formed part of the site team
overseeing the construction works and dealing with the contract management. The experience I
gained from this scheme was invaluable and I thoroughly enjoyed working on it right from the planning
stages to successful completion.”
