Amy Kyme

Job title: Apprenticeships and Employability Advisor

Area of work: Apprentices and Early Careers Team - People and Culture

My name is Amy Kyme and I work as an Apprenticeships and Employability Advisor within the Apprenticeships and Early Careers team, which sits within People and Culture, at Devon County Council.

When did you start at Devon County Council?

I joined Devon County Council in 2016 as a Business Admin Apprentice. Since then, I’ve progressed through levels and through apprenticeships. And, most recently, I completed my Level 5 HR Apprenticeship.

What made you choose to work for Devon County Council?

Like most young people, when I finished college I wasn’t sure what I wanted next. University didn’t feel like the right option for me and I didn’t have a course or an area in mind, that I felt passionate enough about to go and study for 3 years.
I joined Devon County Council to start getting some professional work experience. I ended up finding an area of work I’m passionate about and an organisation, who I felt, has invested in my development.

Can you give an overview of your role?

In my role, I support the Council’s Internal Apprenticeship and Early Careers Programmes. I advise managers on apprenticeships and early careers and support the HR service deliver programmes in line with the Council’s business needs. And, I also helpĀ to maximise return on the Council’s investment in the levy.

As well as this, I provide support to our current apprentices, their line managers, and I also link with our external stakeholders and work towards continuously developing our Apprenticeship and Early Careers offer.

How did you come to be in this role?

I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to complete my Business Admin Apprenticeship back in 2016 within the Apprenticeships and Early Careers Team. I grew passionate about this area of work and quickly realised that this was something I wanted to continue to develop my knowledge and skills in, after I completed my apprenticeship.
So, I applied for opportunities that came up in the team, which led me to to this role today.

What’s your favourite part of what you do?

I love seeing our apprentices journey with the Council, from having little to, maybe, no prior experience. To being confident in their roles as they progress within the Council, and into more senior roles.

How have you progressed through your role?

After completing my apprenticeship, I applied for a permanent role as an Apprenticeship Administrator. I then went on to become an Assistant Apprenticeship Advisor and now I work as an Apprenticeships and Employability Advisor. Completing my different apprenticeships has helped me to develop my knowledge, skills and behaviours. All of which has supported me to achieve these roles.

What benefits do you enjoy?

My top benefits for working at the Council include, the Learning and Development opportunities and the ability to work hybrid between home and in the office, and having a good holiday entitlement. As well as, the additional time off for bank holidays and extra time around Christmas.

What else do you enjoy about your role?

I enjoy working with a team of people who are all equally passionate about supporting our future workforce through our different Early Career Schemes. Whether that be helping someone to get their first work experience placement, their industry placement, as part of their T- Level Course, or their first professional job as an Apprentice.

What do you love about living and working in Devon?

I love living in such a beautiful part of the country with loads of coastal and countryside walks around Devon. And, I enjoy working at Devon County Council as I’ve had so many opportunities to develop myself. But, most importantly, I enjoy what I do as a job, and I feel I’m making a difference to the lives of people in Devon.
