Following completion of my A-levels I deferred my university offer and joined Devon County Council as a Trainee Technician, working in the Area East Highway Design Team. Once back in education, I was fortunate enough to continue this practical experience through a series of summer internships with DCC. After completing my studies (and some time away travelling) I joined the Graduate Trainee scheme and have been here full-time since then.
My day-to-day work involves the delivery of infrastructure schemes around Devon, often taking a project from an initial design brief through to supervision of the construction works on site. I thoroughly enjoy the variety of tasks this entails and it’s always rewarding to see the positive impact our work has around the county. As an employer DCC have always supported my development whilst encouraging me to undertake increasingly challenging and complex tasks. The training and development opportunities are second to none and my personal highlight was the Institution of Civil Engineer’s President’s Apprentice Scheme.
In 2018 DCC helped me fulfil a long-term target of becoming a Chartered Engineer and I’m currently based in the Major Projects Team. I continue to enjoy the benefits of working in such a scenic county and DCC’s flexible and supportive approach certainly helps enable this.
