Clear career progression
We offer a clear and structured career progression pathway if you want to complete the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme with us at Devon County Council (DCC).
To apply for the programme, you must complete your degree in social work and fill in an application form. If successful, your career journey will begin as a newly qualified social worker. Upon completing the first year of the ASYE programme, you will become a social worker, which you will remain throughout the second year. Then, after finishing the two-year programme, you can work towards completing your training to become an experienced social worker.
By extending the programme, we can ensure you receive all the support and development you need to become the most capable and effective children’s social worker. Attractive salary
When you start the ASYE programme as a newly qualified social worker, you will receive a salary based on Grade F scale point 24 (see diagram for current figures). After six months, you will receive an incremental pay increase to Grade F scale point 26.
Upon completing the first year of the ASYE programme, you will advance to Social Worker Grade F scale point 28, a significant step in your career. Here, you will stay until you have completed your Experienced Social Worker portfolio and assessment and become an experienced social worker. Then your salary starts at G29 (£38,626) and will increase from there.

Devon County Council (DCC) believe in investing in our social workers and encouraging practitioners to stay in practice. So retaining the knowledge and expertise of those with significant social work experience is vital to continue to develop our workforce. Therefore, If you stay with Children’s Social Care after completing the ASYE programme, you will:
- Receive up to £2,000 retention payment per year, paid in two six-monthly instalments (pro rata for part-time employees).
- Have your professional re-registration fees paid by DCC.
- Have a clear career progression pathway aligned with the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) Professional Capability Framework (PCF) for social workers.
- Many training courses and learning and development to help you take the next step on the career ladder.
- Have many opportunities to change teams to help you progress in your career.
- Most importantly, you will make a real difference in children’s lives in Devon.
