Volunteer Trainee Ranger

Location: Stover Country Park, Stover, Newton Abbot TQ12 6QG Heritage Fund Logo

Hours per week and working pattern: Starting as soon as possible. Full time for 6 months (Preferable) or Part time for 12 months (Days to be negotiated). This will be based on the operational times of the site and may include weekend work.

Salary: Voluntary with a training budget and expenses

Reporting to: Senior Ranger

Responsibilities:

To assist in the management of the Country Park under the direction of the Ranger staff.

  • To assist with the practical management and site maintenance of the Country Park and other sites.
  • To communicate clearly with visitors and assist with their enquiries.
  • To work alongside contractors, volunteers and work experience students.
  • To assist with local schools and visiting groups.
  • To assist with the construction of infrastructure and projects in relation to the Restoring Stover Park Project.
  • To help promote site events and interpretation.
  • To represent the County Council when meeting park users.
  • To be aware of health and safety in all aspects of work.

As a representative of Devon County Council, you will help to ensure visitors receive a warm welcome and find facilities in a clean and well-maintained condition and will be polite and helpful to the visitors and stakeholders you engage with. You will need to conform to, actively commit to and promote DCC Customer Service Standards both with internal and external ‘customers’ when using any communication media including telephone, email, social media and face to face.
You will think and act carefully to ensure that the health and safety of yourself and others is maintained at all times and will adhere to all safety policies and risk assessments whilst working in the Country Park.

Essential skills, experience and qualifications:

  • You will have a passion for nature and the countryside and be committed to developing a career in countryside management or conservation. You will already have some practical conservation skills or experience as well as a good base knowledge of environmental issues, ecology and habitat conservation.
  • As an enthusiastic and well-organised team member, you will be keen to learn and share skills and will be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide range of people.

Details of employability support:

  • We will work with the successful candidate to create a bespoke development plan and you will also have regular progress reviews with your line manager and receive on the job support and training in all aspects of the role.
  • For this voluntary position, training will be provided for technical career-related certificates such as chainsaw, brush cutter, ATV, pesticide use, first aid, among others to be agreed in the development plan.
  • A travel expenses budget is also available.
  • Towards the end of the placement, we will offer advice and guidance in identifying the skills, knowledge and behaviours you have developed and support with job applications and interview skills, if required.

Knowledge:
  • Good knowledge of environmental issues, ecology and habitat conservation.
  • Possession of a relevant qualification e.g. BSc / HND Environmental Science or Countryside Management.
  • Practical conservation experience
Experience:
  • Good practical skills in order to undertake routine maintenance duties.
  • Experience of working in conservation/countryside management.
  • Computer literate in MS Word and Outlook.
  • Experience in dealing with visitors and visitor management.
