Forest School

Forest School is based on a Scandinavian concept that involves children, young people and adults embarking on long-term educational programmes in an outdoor environment. Sessions are learner-led, giving participants the option to take part in planned activities or to engage in free play.

Forest School takes a holistic approach, focusing on all aspects of child development and growth simultaneously. The programme allows participants to learn a wide range of skills gradually, through a series of small achievable steps, allowing their confidence in themselves and their abilities to progress in a similar manner.

A campfireForest School sessions take place over a number of weeks which allows learners to gradually develop their confidence in being in an outdoor environment. Our activities will depend on the ability and experience of participants. Examples of Forest School activities include:

  • woodland management and nature exploration
  • building dens and other structures
  • fires and cooking
  • games and imaginative play
  • natural crafts
  • using tools, such as knives and saws
  • scavenger hunts
  • pond dipping and bug hunting
