NHS Health Check training

For GP practices who provide NHS Health Checks in Devon we have the following training offers. If you are a GP practice not currently providing health checks but would like to, please contact health.publichealthcontracting-mailbox@devon.gov.uk.

Orientation training for staff new to Health Checks

Staff new to delivering Health Checks will be expected to engage with the NHS Health Check e-learning, as a minimum.

This training is not in place to teach the standard clinical skills, but rather the Health Checks approach and specific parts of the check that may be less familiar.

Practices will receive backfill funding for this training.

Clinical leadership

Practices are strongly encouraged to identify a clinical lead for NHS Health Checks (practices may consider a GP, practice nurse, or similar). The clinical leads will be expected to allocate one hour in total per year to:

  • attend an annual 15 minute briefing on updates on the NHS Health Programme, local initiatives and available support
  • be a point of contact for Devon Public Health regarding clinical oversight
  • oversee or sign off new staff orientation training

Practices will receive backfill funding for attendance.

Annual update training

At least one member of operational delivery staff should access the annual training updates and then disseminate the information to other operational staff delivering Health Checks.

This will include:

  • attendance at an annual training session which will focus on direct patient contact and delivery, including risk communication and behaviour change
  • the attending member of staff sharing materials and learning with the clinical lead and remaining practice team.

Practices will receive backfill funding for attendance.
