Oral health resources for professionals

Public health provides oral health promotion programmes to improve the oral health of our population. This includes oral health surveys and oral health promotion programmes such as the following.

Supervised toothbrushing

Programmes are currently underway to give children time and supervision to brush their own teeth at nursery and reception class in primary schools and nurseries. This makes brushing part of children’s everyday routine and helps to protect their teeth from decay. Dental professionals employed by At Home Dental visit settings to train staff and implement the programme.

First dental steps

Health visitors in Devon are delivering an oral health improvement programme called First Dental Steps. They are trained to give oral health care advice to families with children under two, and can provide oral health care packs (toothbrushes and toothpaste) to families.

Open Wide Step Inside

Open Wide Step Inside is a classroom-based 45 minute oral health promotion programme aimed at children in year 2 and delivered by Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise.

The programme supports teachers with their early years statutory framework to promote good oral health and deliver important key oral health messages. At the end of the session each child will receive an oral health pack which include resources to enable toothbrushing at home.
