Wraparound childcare programme update

Wraparound funding is providing many extended school places to children across Devon. The funding reduces the financial risk for schools and providers, to establish quality childcare, trial extended hours, and options, which will support parents to return to work or training. Whilst the children are entertained in a fun and safe environment.

We have outlined the many benefits of providing wraparound childcare in our previous Digest post.

Applications process

Devon has approved 37 applications for new or extended childcare provision this term. Providing care for over 40 schools. Many more schools are still in the planning stages. Applications need to be in by March 2025 to gain funding for at least a year.

To apply please visit our website: Wraparound childcare – Information for providers – Information for childcare providers

We are hoping the funding application window will be extended beyond March but we are waiting on confirmation from the Department for Education.

Devon is working to turnaround applications within three weeks of applying. Applications are reviewed every Monday. Due to the Christmas break our next review date will be Monday 6th January 2025 with an aim to provide a funded club to start in February 2025.

We have a regularly updated “Frequently asked Questions” page on the website, this can help you to make decisions about how to develop childcare on or near to school sites.

Transport options

We have supported with transport costs to provide a small cluster of schools a central “hub” for an after school club, with children from two other neighbouring schools being transported into the larger school for childcare.

Right to request childcare

Parents should expect to see an expansion in the availability of wraparound childcare in their local area. Parents have the “right to request” childcare from their school if there is no provision available: Responding to requests for wraparound childcare – GOV.UK

Breakfast club rollout

Don’t miss out! Closing date for the expression of interest is 20th December!

Families will soon be able to access 30 minutes of quality childcare ahead of the start of the school day as the government pushes ahead with free breakfast clubs across the country. Schools urged to sign up for free breakfast club rollout – GOV.UK

Schools are being encouraged to sign up to become one of the 750 early adopters schools for the pilot of the Breakfast Clubs. Everything you need to know about free school breakfast clubs – The Education Hub
