DfE early years qualification announcement

Exciting new initiatives for early years qualifications:

The Department for Education (DfE) is thrilled to unveil a comprehensive package of early years qualification initiatives designed to enhance workforce entry and progression. These initiatives aim to ensure that staff working with young children possess the essential skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care and education.

New experience-based route for educators:

Starting from 3rd March 2025, eligible educators will have access to an innovative experience-based route to meet the Staff:Child ratios at level 3. This new pathway acknowledges the invaluable contributions of skilled and experienced staff in early years settings. It offers a fantastic opportunity for educators without currently approved qualifications to advance their careers, while enabling providers to fully use the talents of their staff for the benefit of the children in their care.

Introducing the early years teacher degree apprenticeship:

We are also excited to announce the launch of the Early Years Teacher degree apprenticeship standard. This graduate-level qualification opens doors for everyone, from school leavers and junior staff to senior leaders, to pursue a specialised career in the early years sector.

Check an early years qualification digital service:

Additionally, we are pleased to introduce the Check an Early Years Qualification digital service, set to be available later this Spring. This service will assist early years managers in verifying the approval status of qualifications held by current and prospective staff members, ensuring they have appropriately qualified practitioners ahead of the September expansion.
