Big Brush Club – supervised brushing in early years settings plus oral health webinar on 15 September

The Oral Health Improvement Team would like to let you know about a fantastic scheme designed to get children engaging with toothbrushing from an early age. Big Brush Club is a supervised toothbrushing scheme funded by the NHS, being delivered to early years settings across the Southwest.

Tooth decay is the most common reason for hospital admission for young children, and the sad truth is that this is largely preventable. In 2022, a shocking 60,000 school days were missed due to tooth extractions and 1 in 5 children aged 3-5 in England experienced tooth decay.

Big Brush Club wants to help tackle this problem. We aim to reduce children’s hospital visits and school absences due to dental issues, ultimately easing the pressure on the NHS and reducing pain and disruption for children. To do this, we’re promoting oral health in educational settings and are equipping teaching staff to carry out daily toothbrushing sessions from within the classroom.

Goals:

  • Improve oral wellbeing in children
  • Build a foundation for lifelong oral health
  • Reduce pain and disruption due to tooth decay
  • Support the NHS

What’s involved?

Our project facilitators will provide each school with comprehensive training, all equipment and engaging educational resources to support you with supervised toothbrushing. We’ll provide you with all that you need to run effective toothbrushing sessions in your classroom.

  • Can take place any time of day
  • Only takes 5 minutes per day
  • Full support and training
  • Educational resources on-hand
  • Toothbrushes, racks and toothpaste provided

Oral health webinar – Tues 15th September (6.30pm – 8pm)

This is a free 1.5 hour children’s oral health improvement training session aimed at parents, teachers, carers, support workers, and enablers who work with or care for children (Teams invite will be sent to your email).
