The annual Childcare Sufficiency Report for 2023 – 2024 is published

The 2023-2024 Childcare Sufficiency Assessment Report was signed off at Cabinet on 8 January 2025.

Anyone interested in expanding or setting up new early years and childcare provision in Devon should read the report to determine where more places are needed – we call these Hotspots.

There is a need for more baby places and more two-, three- and four-year olds all-year-round places across the county. There is also a need for more holiday provision for all ages of children.

The Hotspot areas in the below identify where there are places needed for during term times as well as all year round:

Hotspot area Places needed
Cranbrook Under Fives
Cullompton Two Year Olds
Exeter North East Two Year Olds
Honiton Two Year Olds
Appledore, Northam & Westward Ho! Under Fives
Bickington Two Year Olds
Ilfracombe Two Year Olds
Great Torrington Under Fives
Ivybridge Two Year Olds
Okehampton Two Year Olds
Ambrook (Villages South of Newton Abbot) Three and Four Year Olds
Kenn Valley Three and Four Year Olds

There is a lot of information and data within the report. Please take time to read the report and if you have any comments or suggestions, please email: childcareinformation-mailbox@devon.gov.uk

We are focused on the development of more places over the coming year and will share progress and opportunities on our web on New and Developing Childcare Businesses.

Don’t forget to tell us if you are expanding or creating new places by updating the Provider Self Update. If you have a story to share (with photos) about your growth we would love to hear about it and share it on the website. Simply drop us an email at the address above.
