Don’t miss out on wraparound childcare funding

Providing wraparound childcare from 8am – 6pm is a positive addition for many schools, childcare can help to increase admissions. Over half of Devons early years children, currently access extended hours, when these children start school, parents choice of provision will often be dependent on who can offer continuous wraparound childcare.

The funding is available for a limited time only, schools with little or no childcare, can apply to provide the ‘Full Core Offer’ (of 8am -6pm), wraparound provision. Wraparound childcare – Information for providers – Information for childcare providers

The Department for Education has guaranteed funding for at least a year, to settings who start or expand their childcare before 31 March 2025.

The application process has been streamlined, applications are being reviewed on a weekly basis (Mondays), we are trying to respond within two weeks of us receiving the application. If a private or voluntary setting, offers wraparound childcare to a school, this should be advertised on the schools websites, as many do have childcare options, which parents may not be aware of it. Schools don’t have to provide the childcare themselves they can work in partnership with other local providers.

Support to set up wraparound provision:

As part of the application process, applicants need to contact their Early Years and Childcare Advisor. The Early Years and Childcare Service Team offer a wealth of knowledge and support from knowing what other provision there is in the area to registering for OFSTED and the general management of a childcare setting and safer recruitment process.

Wraparound training:

With the development of the wraparound childcare, Devon is committed to high quality provision, the key to this is well qualified staff.

All settings who have either created or extended hours are provided with a start-up grant which is designed to help support set-up costs, but can also be used as supply cover or training hours for staff to attend Devon’s training, most of which is fully funded or part funded.  Training is available on the DEL training website and the Devon Education Services Shop.

Facilitating children’s right to play (face to face)

The aim of the course is to explore in detail the key theories and legislation which underpin the importance of, and need for providing the opportunity and space for children’s play,  Including play cues, play principles and types of play to help you to support the children in your settings, whilst considering the impact of the playworker on their play and the play space. This is a face to face session.

Participants will be given the opportunity to participate in activities which will underpin this knowledge and how this can then be transferred into their own setting.

Open to all practitioners who working the out of school sector i.e.; breakfast club, after school club, holiday club and HAF provision. The focus of this course is to work with children from reception to year six.

Paediatric first aid training

This 12 hour course is consistent with the criteria set out in Annex A of the EYFS statutory framework.

This course comprises of:

  • 6 hours independent study (eLearning)
  • 6 hours skills assessment (in person; small groups of 12 maximum)

Dates of skills session:

  • Wednesday 12th February 2025 (9.30am – 4.30pm) – East Devon Business centre, Honiton
  • Saturday 1st March 2025 (9.30am – 4.30pm) – The Courtenay Centre, Newton Abbot
  • Saturday 29th March 2025 (9.30am – 4.30pm) – Willand Village Hall, Nr. Cullompton

Cost: £75 per person

Safeguarding and Child Protection Core (all early years and childcare practitioners) (previously safeguarding awareness group 2 core)

The safeguarding awareness training is suitable for childminders and all those working in early years and childcare group-based settings (i.e.; assistants / apprentices/ volunteers).

To recognise your role and responsibilities in safeguarding and protecting children, know what concerns to be alert to and how to raise them in line with local processes. The training can be undertaken either as eLearning or a virtual session.

Needs to be refreshed every 3 years.

Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) training:

After watching a 25-minute video there is a short quiz that is designed to test your knowledge.

The course will provide you with an understanding of the role of the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO); it explains what should be referred to the LADO and, importantly, what should not be referred.

This course is for anyone who works with or cares for children and young people within Devon. It is fully funded.
