Councillors come from all sorts of backgrounds and, if anything, life experience is the most important attribute you can bring to the role. You don’t need any qualifications.
You can stand for election as a Devon county councillor if you:
- are 18 or older on the day of nomination
- are a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, a qualifying EU citizen or an EU citizen with retained rights
- live, work or own property in Devon
- have not been declared bankrupt or ‘otherwise disqualified’ from being elected
- are not a Devon County Council employee
If you are in any doubt about whether you are eligible to stand as a councillor, please read the full eligibility qualifications and disqualifications from The Electoral Commission.
